SHAH ALAM

A)     INTRODUCTION

The sewer network for the above located area in Seksyen 7, Shah Alam, Selangor was first constructed and laid by Perbadanan Kemajuan Negeri Selangor (PKNS) in 1996 to cater for the requirement needs of the residents of Section 7, Shah Alam. With the introduction of universities in the area, namely UITM and UNISEL, along with the new housing developments has initiated the requirement for the rehabilitation of the sewer network. The sewer network is located on Persiaran University and is connected to Indah Water Konsortium (IWK) sewage treatment plant with the total length of 3.3km. The sewerage network being located in Shah Alam falls under the jurisdiction of Majlis Bandaraya Shah Alam (MBSA).

The Section 7 network currently serves the public needs and the growth in the Section 7 catchment consists of 90% developed area while 10% are undeveloped area with future expansion plans. Besides the residential areas which are connected to the sewer network, most of petrol stations, fast food restaurants, schools, hospitals and buildings are also connected leading the sewage to the STP serving 90,800 PE.

Current issues has risen from the condition of the pipeline network and manholes in this catchment contributing effluent non-compliances. The issues faced within this catchment can be summarized as per below;

  • Severe infiltration to sewer pipeline
  • Frequent complaints from the public of overflowing sewage
  • Blockages in sewer lines
  • Collapsed pipelines

Due to this arising situation, the best solution would be to introduce trenchless method of rehabilitation minimizing the impact to the public, housing, amenities and environment which entailed the client to open tenders to contractors. solutions of network rehabilitation using CIPP, Pipe jacking, manhole rehabilitation and minimizing open cut works.

 

 

B) SCOPE OF WORKS

The works for this conventional method project as designed by PKNS project consultant, MINCONSULT Sdn Bhd. We were required to test all pipelines and manholes and commission to be handed over to Indah Water Konsortium.

The rehabilitation project is aimed to achieve several but not limited to the benefits listed below;

  • To comply to latest Standard A effluent of Environmental Quality (sewage) Regulations 2009
  • Reduce pollution loading into receiving water courses
  • Reducing the number of public complaints in relation to odour, buffer and aesthetic issues

Gravity designed sewers are mostly proposed along public road and are ideally rehabilitated using both trenchless and pipe jacking method. Pipe Jacking has been proposed for all sewers where cannot be rehabilitated via CIPP. All existing sewers and manholes which are to be decommissioned after diversion and connected to the new trunk sewers will be safely abandoned. The abandoned sewers have to be filled with sand and sealed permanently at the top. Manhole within road pavement should have the top section removed and the road paved over the abandoned manhole.

The works scope was split to two sections; Phase 1 which is design and build fully under our scope and Phase 2 conventional design which involves the rehabilitation works only.
